Heritage Wall
Going up? Don't forget to look closely at the walls surrounding the escalators
from the casino level to the mezzanine (next to the Northern Lights Theater).
There you will find the gift of history in a wall of shadowboxes. Authentic photographs
and artifacts dot the walls with the past, and lead to the present of the Potawatomi
tribe.
According to Caralee Fincher, Art Director at MJM Studios, a conference was arranged
with tribal elders and artisans in Crandon, Wisconsin, to choose the items that
would best represent the tribe's history. These people brought in hundreds of
photos and artifacts that they had collected or created over the years. From these
items, about 20 artifacts were chosen to be carefully placed in the beautifully
lit shadowboxes that adorn the escalator walls. Several of the items were collected
from a tribal member who is known for his leather and beadwork. He was commissioned
to make several items and also provided unfinished panels with beadwork that had
been with him for years. The panels reflect the painstaking detail and process
involved in creating these beautiful and historical items. Some of the artifacts
that can be seen in on Heritage Wall include clothing, moccasins, beadwork, baskets
and a ceremonial drum. Photos reflect the lives of tribal elders through the generations.
