5 Ways Heart of Canal Street is Helping Kids in 2017

Heart of Canal Street, Potawatomi Hotel & Casino’s annual charitable initiative, is in full swing and will be celebrating 24 years since its inception in 1994. The program raises money to support 31 local children’s charities in Southeastern Wisconsin primarily through the Canal Street bingo game which will be available during every bingo session through December 14.

Heart of Canal Street funds will benefit children in the community – but how? Check out the great work that our charity of choice and 10 other signature charity partners are doing in Milwaukee.

1. Providing Access to the Arts
This year Potawatomi has the privilege of working with both Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra who both provide musical education to students with barriers to access.

2. Offering Mentorships
Mentoring programs like those provided by Running Rebels and Big Brother Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee provide the necessary supports and opportunities for personal and professional youth growth in the city of Milwaukee.

3. Empowering Youth through Collaboration
Whether strengthening relationships through youth and community partnerships with Safe & Sound, supporting families during times of need at the Ronald McDonald House or utilizing intervention services to provide personal and independent living skills with organizations like Life Navigators, helping the youth and their families within the community to feel strong and capable is of utmost importance.

4. Facilitating Social-Emotional Development
Social-emotional development is a crucial component in determining the happiness and success of youth in the community. Organizations like Girls on the Run and Muscular Dystrophy Association find creative ways for children to explore personal interests while gaining self-esteem and making lifelong friends.

5. Creating Innovative, Hands-On Learning Opportunities
Having the opportunity to learn through experience is a great way to engage youth in educational pursuits and dialogues in new and exciting ways. Potawatomi is thrilled to support ALS Wisconsin Chapter and Zachariah’s Acres in their student-focused programming.
