The Terry Sims Band
Friday, November 23 at 9 p.m.
The enduring success of The Terry Sims Band is one of the great stories of Milwaukee music. A local phenomenon, the band has forged a sound all its own while on its own terms.
Started in 2003, the band currently enjoys positive vibes and undiluted jazz funk. Throughout the life of the band, keyboardist, composer and arranger, Terry Sims, has been the aural architect of the band. After brief forays into R&B, many of the core members of the band arrived from separate paths. Alvin Turner and James Dallas (sax), Chris Kringle and Kenny Garrett (bass), with Olen Franklin and Andre Torrence (drums) and John Moss and Mike DeRose (guitar) bring similar, yet independent, styles that develop a unique and original sound. The newest member, Alesia Miller (vocals), increases the band’s range, from a high-energy show at Jazz in the Park in Milwaukee, to a smooth and intimate performance at Piano Blu in Pewaukee.
Playing modern grooves tinged with funk, jazz, smooth jazz and Latin jazz, as well as R&B, rock and top 40, the band is inspired by a hybrid of music which it refers to as, “the Milwaukee sound.” The Terry Sims Band has toured and opened for Earth, Wind & Fire, Frankie Beverly and Maze, and Mint Condition.
